Bins and Benches

The ‘Bins and Benches’ initiative by the Shrewsbury Men’s Shed is a shining example of community spirit and practical craftsmanship coming together to make a real difference. In partnership with Shropshire Council, members of the Shed have taken on the task of renovating many of the town and county’s iconic public benches and litter bins. These familiar fixtures, often weather-worn and overlooked, are being carefully restored to their former glory by skilled volunteers who strip, repair, repaint, and refinish each item with care and pride.

This initiative not only helps preserve the character of Shrewsbury’s public spaces but also provides a consistent revenue stream for the Shed, supporting its charitable activities and workshop operations. At a time when councils are under increasing financial pressure, the partnership offers a cost-effective solution that delivers high-quality results without the high price tag of complete replacements or outsourced contractors.

Through this work, the Shrewsbury Men’s Shed is helping to maintain the visual charm and usability of local streets, parks, and public areas, while reinforcing the value of local skills and collaboration. It’s a win-win-win situation: the council saves money, the community benefits from improved amenities, and the Shed continues to thrive as a hub of purpose, connection, and hands-on creativity.
